For many people, the first experience of ABM comes when they seek relief from chronic, stubborn pain that other modalities have not sufficiently eliminated.  ABM has proven to be transformative for those who have been experiencing long term pain as they find they can be comfortable and pain free after all.  If you have pain in your back, neck, shoulder, hips or joints you will be pleased with the outcomes you experience.

ABM does not seek to “cure” but instead teaches you to act (move) in such a way that the source of the pain becomes irrelevant.  Most approaches involve making a structural change of some sort - for example surgery, chiropractic, massage etc.  In many cases these strategies work and pain is eliminated but if not, it is likely that you are moving in a way that causes pain.

The Problem

The way that we move is a culmination of our life experience so far - injuries, beliefs about how we hold ourselves and countless other factors have contributed to the way we move.  If the way you are moving is causing pain - and it probably is - then the solution is to learn ways to act that ensure you remain comfortable.  The problem is that if you knew how to move painlessly you already would.  However, your experience so far has not provided the opportunity for you to learn to move in a pain free way.

The Solution

The good news is that learning harmonious movement is not only

possible but is an enjoyable experience that can lead to increased vitality and zest for life.

The way in which we move is dictated by the brain.  All movement originates in the brain and so if you wish to develop new movement patterns it is necessary to bring about changes in the brain.  This is where ABM varies from techniques which manipulate the painful body part.  In ABM movement sequences are performed in a very specific way that presents new options to the brain.  The brain then has more options to choose from when it directs the body to move.  Since all of the options that have been presented are easy and comfortable, the new movement patterns when selected by the brain will be easy and comfortable.

Individual Lessons

Since our focus is on the brain and on learning we refer to our sessions as lessons.  One on one lessons are known as Functional Synthesis (FS).DSC_0075.jpg

In an FS lesson your movement patterns are analyzed and you then typically lie on a table while the practitioner moves your body in various ways that present useful information to the brain.  Movement in specific areas is introduced as well as the relationship between movements in different areas of the body.

The practitioner creates a customized lesson for your specific needs and provides the experience of comfortable and easy movement.  You (your brain) are then able to organize and move your body in a way that is more comfortable and more effective.

Group Lessons

Group Lessons are known asTransformational Movement Lessons or TML.

testIn TML, students perform a series of movements designed to bring greater awareness to their capabilities, working through a series of gentle, comfortable steps that involve thinking, sensing, moving, and visualizing. Students develop enhanced awareness of habitual patterns and rigidities. They expand options for moving with increased sensitivity, learning to eliminate unnecessary effort, attend to their whole self, and mobilize intention into action.

Students learn to use their body better and more efficiently, leading to greater power and grace in movement. Improvements in balance, posture, and physical comfort follow.
